The herpes simplex virus is quite common, affecting millions of people. Unfortunately, there is no cure for this disease but there are various ways to treat it and keep it in check.
There are two types of this illness, commonly known as cold sores or fever blisters. Herpes simplex 1 is responsible for a larger percentage of skin infections on the face and lips, while Herpes simplex 2 most often affects the genitalia. In either case, it is a virus marked initially by small red bumps that form blisters. Oftentimes the infected area burns or may be itchy. After a short period of time the blisters dry up and give way to a yellowish crust formation. Eventually, this crust falls off and the red coloration dissipates. The entire cycle lasts up to two weeks, with alternating flare-ups and calm periods.
